Yoga with JaimeeClick the buttons below to explore the opportunities to work with Jaimee. | Next up in our Yoga Teacher Highlight series, we’re featuring our dynamic and one of a kind yoga teacher Jaimee Schick! She teaches a myriad of classes here at Roswell Yoga Life, and we’re so lucky to have her as a part of the family! During our interview, she told us about her past of breaking through discomfort through a yoga practice, her extensive training, and what makes her classes a learning (and teaching) experience for everyone in the room! Learn more below: Tell me a little bit about your yoga journey from the beginning. I took my first yoga class my freshman year of college. A friend convinced me to take this crazy, hot, dance-like yoga class with her. I began practicing more regularly when I was pregnant with my daughter and began to see the affects yoga had not only on my body but my mind as well. After graduating with my degree in psychology my family and I moved to Georgia where I enrolled in my 200 hour training. Those of you that have been through training know how it transforms your life; I was completely hooked! Where have you trained and with whom? How has it shaped your yoga journey? There really are no words to describe how grateful I am that I found myself a part of the Etowah Valley Yoga family. I did my 200 hour training there with Sue Hopkins. I am currently enrolled in EVY’s 500 hour and Yoga Therapy certification program as well. I did a lot of research when I decided I wanted to teach yoga and landed on Sue’s program all the way up in Cartersville for various reasons. We learned not only about yoga but also how to teach it (which is more rare than you’d think!), how to connect with students on and off the mat. I truly believe I will forever continue to learn and grow there throughout my career! What's it like to be a part of the RYL community? During my yoga career I’ve had so many people tell me that you will attract who you need, and who needs you. That is prevalent now more than ever. Just in the short time that I have been able to be a part of RYL it is so clear that this space was so needed. The most awesome community is forming already and I am so proud to be a part of it! Did you ever see yourself teaching yoga when you started practicing? When did you know that you were called to teach? Never in a million years did I think I’d be a yoga instructor. I went to school for Psychology because I knew that I wanted to help people. Problem was, I graduated and still was not sure what that meant for me. I was fortunate enough to find a yoga practice as a not very cheerful pregnant student. Yoga not only eased the discomfort in my body during that time of my life, but it also transformed my mind. I wanted to share that magic with others. Shortly after I had my beautiful blessing of a daughter, I was reading a magazine of my step-mom’s and saw an article on yoga therapy, and knew that it was what I was meant to do. What does yoga mean to you? For me yoga is a home. No matter where I am, no matter what I’m doing, no matter who I’m with, no matter what is happening in my life; I step on my yoga mat and truly feel at home. What is the most magical thing about yoga? The most “magical” thing about yoga is that it makes you believe you are working your body, when the real work is happening in your mind. What is the greatest gift that yoga can offer? I think the greatest gift that yoga can offer is it’s ability to be any gift that it’s practitioner needs. One pose, one class, one breath, can do something different for every person. Last month we were focusing on our Teen Yoga classes. Why do teens especially need yoga in their lives? Oh wow.. I think the question is why DON’T teens need yoga?! Teenage years are a time of transition and change. Yoga gives you stability and grounding during all of that. It also gives you a place of non-judgment where you can be yourself, which is probably the hardest thing to come by during that time. What is your favorite music to practice to, and why? My favorite song to practice to is a Florence & The Machine cover of Addicted to Love. You’ll hear it on almost every one of my playlists, and I’ll probably crank it up! I have no idea why, it just makes me want to tune into my breath and flow. I also love Trevor Hall and Michael Franti, with a few random songs thrown in there just for fun! What 3 words would describe your life outside of your yoga practice? Mama, Partner, Laughter What is your greatest guilty pleasure? Ice Cream. And Pizza. And television series. And coffee. Please don’t make me choose! Anything your students ought to know about you? I learn from them just as much as they learn from me.
