Yoga with SophiaClick the buttons below to explore the opportunities to work with Sophia. | ALOOOOOOOHA and Mahalo for joining us this month as we feature Sophia, a Hawaii-based yoga teacher planting roots in the Roswell community! We are pleased to welcome her into the RYL family, and hope you enjoy our monthly teacher spotlight for Sophia! Explore her guilty pleasures (you won't believe what it is!), learn why she started yoga, and connect with her sweet spirited nature: Tell me a little bit about your yoga journey from the beginning. I started out in Hawaii-- the yoga community is huge over there! Being a nurse for almost 9 years, I wanted to reach out to people beyond the medical community. Being surrounded by people that are sick and in pain, I just knew that I needed an outlet to rejuvenate my spirit in order to be the best nurse I could be to my patients. What's it like to be a part of the RYL community? First off, I am grateful to the lovely Mrs. Gretchen Griffin for giving me a chance when so many yoga studios turned me down. Being a rookie and new to teaching yoga, I know that yoga studio owners have a lot of consider when hiring teachers, especially my circumstance. I was going through a phase where I felt defeated and thought maybe it wasn't my time to be a yoga teacher. When I was given the opportunity to teach at RYL, I was happy, excited, and nervous all at the same time! The RYL community has been nothing but nurturing, supportive, and a great learning experience for me! I am learning everyday and so excited to say that I enjoy experiencing this continuing journey with the RYL community. Did you ever see yourself teaching yoga when you started practicing? Not at all (haha)! When I started practicing a year before teacher training, I was practicing for health and to lower my stress levels from work. However, the more I got into yoga, my heart was screaming for me to become a teacher. I want to share my love for yoga to others because it has truly changed my life for the better. When did you know that you were called to teach? After my father was diagnosed with a terminal disease, I knew that I needed an outlet. My heart, mind, and spirit was very heavy with pain and loneliness. I knew that I needed something to help me get through it. Everyone can experience pain, but at the end of the day, everyone is deserving of love, redemption, and peace. One thing that stood out to me the most that was stated by an international yoga teacher I follow and will always carry with me is: yoga is a path of redemption, a way for us to heal and reestablish our trust in the basic goodness of the universe, a way for us to finally learn that we are okay just as we are and that we are worthy of all the love we seek. My goal as a daughter, sister, friend, and yoga teacher is to show this every time to others. What does yoga mean to you? There is not enough room for me to tell you what yoga means to me! However, what I can say is that yoga is loving, forgiving, and has helped manifest my dreams into reality which is striving to be the best person I can be to myself and others. As silly as that sounds, it's the complete and honest truth. What is the most magical thing about yoga? Yoga transpires you to push you to your positive limits and to help you break through your toughest challenges in life. It helps mold you to become better! Why do people especially need yoga in their lives? I truly believe that if people practice yoga and meditate, it would bring more peace into the world. Yoga helps you do things that feed your soul, not your ego and make you happy. There is no competition or judgement in yoga that I love since our society can have a tendency of being negative at times and breaking down your spirit. Yoga also provides holistic and health healing aspects. Which yoga pose has been the most challenging for you? Doing the scary handstand! However, I will not give up on it as it is my dream to conquer my fears into feeling comfortable being upside down! Which yoga pose are you most excited for when in class? I love doing core exercises! Also love Crow and Astavakrasana (eight angled pose)! What is your favorite music to practice to, and why? I love all kinds of music but I love hip/hop, R&B, Pop, to Indie music. What 3 words would describe your life outside of your yoga practice? Caretaker, adventurous, and risk taker! What is your greatest guilty pleasure? I can kill a whole dozen box of Glazed Krispy Kreme Doughnuts! Anything your students ought to know about you? I am a hard worker and will do my best with any situation that is presented to me. I am a social butterfly and love to have fun! I like making people laugh with my corny jokes and putting a smile on people's faces. :) |
